Kerudung Sang Ratu dan Ironisnya Turki

Queen veiled and ironicTurkey. It maybe rare for British media  to see her Queen wearing a veiled, that is why they put that event into their headline news. But for me, what is quite rare is Turkey itself ....

On a four-day visit to Turkey with her husband Prince Philip,  Queen Elizabeth II in the company of Turkish First Lady Hayrünnisa Gül make a visit to 15th century Green Mosque, one of most important mosques in Turkey. Green Mosque is located in the eastern city of Bursa. Queen Elizabeth also visited the tomb of Sultan Mohmed, the fifth of 39 sultans who ruled Turkey during the 624-year Ottoman Empire, inside the mosque.

What make the limelight of this visit for British media is the Queen took off her white shoes at the mosque entrance, wore a head-cover and listened to Noble Quran verses recited by Imam Ayhan Polat. It maybe quite rare for British media  to see her Queen wearing a veiled, that is why the put that event into their headline news.

I don't want to discuss what British media says about their Queen wearing a head-cover. But what i see is something weird has happened in Turkey. While the Queen donned a head-cover when visiting a mosque, women in Turkey still has to fight to get permission wearing hijab in public area such as university, school and government buildings.

Secularists, including army generals, judges and university rectors in Turkey  are barring women from wearing hijab- a mandatory code of dress in Islam-in public buildings. They see hijab as emblem of Islam which threaten secularism. how ironic it is .....
